Get Creative with Air Plants!

Tillandsias (Air Plants) are all the rage right now. This is a plant I haven’t had much experience with and I thought it was about time! Researching Air Plants, I learned they are a cinch to grow. Not even requiring dirt, these little Bromeliads thrive on benign neglect. Native to South and Central

A Fire Pit Fairy Garden ~ Two Versions, Choose Your Favorite!

My dear friend recently asked if I wanted this rusted-out fire pit for a project of some sort. “Knowing you, you’ll make something cute out of it!” she said. And so I did. But, there was a slight problem. I had two ideas and couldn’t decide which one I liked better! My solution was to

Fresh Flower Basket for May Day or Mother’s Day!

Don’t spend money at the florist for May baskets or Mother’s Day. Gather your own beautiful blooms! Each year I keep on the lookout for new baskets on clearance or gently used from garage sales to make my floral arrangements. These pretty metal hearts I picked up for a song at a yard sale last

It’s About Blooming Time ~ Spring Potting Time!

Well, it’s about blooming time, isn’t it? That was without a doubt one of the longest winters I can remember and I, for one, am glad to finally have spring here again. Even now, the days are deceptively warm and the nights shockingly cold. So, during the day, the herb and vegetable starts come

DIY Project : Spring Windowbox Time!

At long last, Spring! Bird song heralds the day’s start. Crocus, snowdrops and tete a tete daffodils are blooming, seemingly overnight, after only a warm day or two. To celebrate the beginning of spring, I like to change out the winter windowboxes to early spring blooms. My secrets revealed, I don’t actually plant in soil!

Burlap ~ a thrifty container liner

Container planting baskets and hayracks are such lovely garden accents, but have you seen how much the replacement liners cost?  Ours had lasted about five years but were finally too tattered to look good or hold the soil in the container any more. Coco-fiber replacement liners were twenty dollars or more apiece! So I

Galvanized Garden ~ Repurposed Container Planting

When our waste management company provided large, rolling plastic containers, we were left with an assortment of galvanized trash cans. Then we moved and inherited more cans and wash tubs! What to do with too many galvanized containers? Why, make a galvanized garden, of course! Drill drainage holes in the bottoms of the cans first.
