Heart & Home ~ Valentine’s Day is Coming!

Mid- winter now and, besides a couple brief snows, the garden is quiet. Time to look to a wonderful winter blooming shrub: Mahonia Japonica, for adding a bit of color to the landscape and outside decor. Since Valentine’s Day is in a month, I decided to change up a few outdoor displays today. Out came

DIY Project ~ Turn a Rake Head into a Bird Buffet!

Besides the three regular bird feeders I keep filled year-round, I decided to prepare a bird buffet feeding station. So, out to the garden shed I went to root around until I came up with an idea. And, there it was, a rake head with lots of prongs to hold bird goodies galore. Into

Winter Wonderland ~ It Finally Snowed!

This morning we awoke to fat, fluffy snowflakes cascading down, and I was thrilled to see them! I just love the way that soft white blanket transforms our landscape. Although this first snow didn’t amount to much, just a couple of inches, I threw on my boots and winter woolies and did a

DIY Project ~ Create a Woodland-Inspired Wreath or Centerpiece for the Holidays on the Cheap!

The latest DCH workshop was a huge success! As we entered, rack after rack of every green you can imagine and a huge display of woodland and garden accents greeted us. Christmas music and refreshments quickly put everyone in the holiday spirit, not to mention the lovely aroma of all those fresh greens. DCH staff

It’s beginning to look a lot like … Chanukah!

We celebrate Chanukah, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy decorating both inside and outside as much as the next person! Instead of a tree and the trimmings, you’ll find winter-themed outdoor decorations and special Chanukah vignettes made with heirlooms and handcrafted treasures. The outdoor decorations this year are  birdhouse and garden themed

DIY Project ~ Save Money by Creating Your Own Fancy Potted Paperwhites & Amaryllis Bulb Gardens

Last weekend I took an inspiration tour through the nearby Terrain Nursery Store. What a wonderful experience for the senses: freshly cut greens, bulb plantings in gorgeous containers, lovely music playing and plants of every texture and color. But when I read a few price tags, I was quickly jettisoned back to reality! As beautiful

DIY Project ~ Design a Rustic Cottage Getaway … in a Terrarium!

Recently, I found a tiny little porcelain cottage at a garage sale and decided it needed a terrarium to call home. Not much is happening outside in the garden this time of year, so working in my garden room has to satisfy my green thumb for the time being. Making a terrarium is a quick

Emily Smith does it again! Her most recent floral arranging workshop at the Delaware Center for Horticulture was a big hit with the class, creating fresh fruit and flower Thanksgiving cornucopias. Wonderful materials were available : radishes, pears, lady apples, greens (including sage leaves, seeded eucalyptus and cedar), snapdragons, mini-carnations, roses, mums, hypericum and sunflowers.
