Field Trip: Creating a Beautiful Fall Floral Arrangement in a Pumpkin at The DCH

Emily and her Fall-inspired Pumpkin Patch arrangement.

Last month, I had such fun making an apple basket arrangement in Emily Smith’s  Delaware Center for Horticulture workshop that I signed up again! This time Emily had little orange pumpkins ready for us, already cleaned out! She had pre-selected flowers, greens and fillers to represent the glorious fall colors for this sweet little “Pumpkin Patch” floral arrangement.

Emily doesn’t just set up a workshop, she creates the mood! The room had orange paper lanterns hanging from the rafters, a beautiful fall display table was set with the materials and a sample arrangement, and apple cider and candy corn were available for snacking too.

Here are the materials we used in the arrangement: Broom Corn, millet, thistle, orange carnations, smaller raspberry colored carnations, hypericum, pittosporum leaves, honey bracelet, seeded eucalyptus, and copper beech tree leaves. Presoaked oasis and a small plastic container that fit into our pumpkin,  plus a paring knife and scissors, rounded out all we needed to get busy.

My finished pumpkin arrangement looks great on the dining table !

First, we trimmed the sides of the oasis and tucked the scraps into the sides of the container to stabilize the arrangement.

Then we added the greens : seeded eucalyptus, pittosporum and millet. Next, the carnations were placed carefully, followed by the broom corn for height, thistle for added interest , beech leaves and hypericum as filler. Emily even had some pretty copper colored ribbon handy and demonstrated how to make a professional bow.

Everyone in the workshop carried out a beautiful pumpkin arrangement, perfect for the fall season. Amazingly, each and every pumpkin was as unique as its creator! I’m already signed up for Emily’s next “Floral Arrangement of the Month” for November (Nov. 14th.) when we’ll make a Thanksgiving arrangement. Can’t wait!!

Fall pumpkins were used as the base of our floral arrangement.
